Located in Northern California, Placer County serves over 317,000 residents (as of 2005 census) from its border with Sacramento County to the Nevada state line. Placer County is a land of diversity, with its boundaries stretching from the agriculturally rich Sacramento Valley through rolling foothills dotted with ranches to the snow-capped crest of the Sierra Nevada. In between is a landscape that provides a wide range of lifestyle choices, a number of world-class recreation and tourist destinations and a healthy mix of business and employment opportunities.
Placer County is also home to important historical riches. Within its boundaries the Donner Party became stranded in the Sierra Nevada on an early attempt to cross the mountain range. And many of Placer's communities farther west were created by the surge of immigrants who flocked to the region during the Gold Rush. Historic Route 49, which connects a string of charming Gold Rush villages, traverses along its foothills. Auburn, the county seat, is a well-preserved Gold Rush town and a delightful tourist destination.
Other cities that have grown from this fertile landscape include Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Colfax and Loomis, as well as the communities of Granite Bay, Foresthill, Sheridan, Penryn, Ophir, Newcastle, Dutch Flat, Alta, Tahoe City, and Kings Beach.
The county is one of the fastest growing in California. These new residents are drawn by a wide range of housing opportunities. One can live a rugged, rural lifestyle either in the forests of the High Sierra or on the many ranches that still dot the rolling foothills. Another option is the easy life in a fast-growing number of suburban communities. And days full of urban amenities are a possibility as well.
Home styles in Placer County range from elegant Victorians in Auburn to the attractive older homes bordering Roseville's Old Town. The area also includes Del Webb's Sun City, an active adult community in Roseville, with a second Del Webb project (Sun City Lincoln Hills) in Lincoln. Bickford Ranch, a new development located between Lincoln and Newcastle near Sierra College, promises 1,110 new homes and a golf course. Master-planned communities include Twelve Bridges in Lincoln, situated on 3,000 acres.
Placer County also features custom homes in the upscale community of Granite Bay, many of which have views of Folsom Lake. Granite Bay has abundant shopping, a variety of restaurants and 16.5 acres that will eventually provide the community with ball fields, picnic areas, playgrounds and bike trails. Included are 6.5 acres of protected wetlands and stands of oak trees that preserve a natural landscape and wildlife sanctuary.
Another draw to the area is a diverse and healthy economy. Placer County is home to an expanding computer and business services industry along its southern border, and tourism remains high in the mountains where world class ski resorts flourish in the Sierra's powdery slopes.
Among business heavyweights that call Placer County home are Oracle, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Roseville Medical Center and the Union Pacific Railroad, as well as NEC Electronics and Hewlett-Packard. Another plus is the Galleria at Roseville, a regional mall featuring 1.1 million square feet of retail space.
Outstanding recreation marks Placer County as a special place indeed. Folsom Lake, one of the largest in California and near Sacramento, offers boating, water-skiing, fishing, camping and horseback riding. Heading up the foothills, the historic villages on Route 49, the Golden Chain Highway that connects Mother Lode hamlets, offer pretty downtowns with shopping and cultural events to fill plenty of weekends. And higher up into the Sierra Nevada snow-covered mountains lure enthusiasts of snowboarding, skiing and snowmobiling. Summer invites water-skiing, sailing, scuba diving and fishing at Lake Tahoe. Old-fashioned family fun includes Fourth of July festivities at the Placer County Fairgrounds, home to the Placer County Fair.
